Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (Tata Power-DDL) has been honoured with the ‘Battery Storage Project of the Year’ Award at the 17th Asian Power Awards, a release by the power utility said.

The company has been conferred with this award for installing India’s first grid-connected Community Energy Storage System (CESS) at Rani Bagh, New Delhi in association with Nexcharge, a brand by Exide Lechanche Energy Pvt Ltd.

The CESS

The 150kW/528kWh CESS at Rani Bagh substation has improved the power supply reliability at the distribution level and has helped in providing continuous and reliable power to key consumers during exigency.

CESS supports the distribution transformers in managing the peak load, voltage regulation, power factor improvement, frequency regulation and deviation settlement mechanism. Such a system is particularly helpful in densely populated/congested areas where load stability and adequacy of supply is a concern.

Towards a stable grid

Battery-based energy storage allows electricity to be stored and delivered within milliseconds, reducing instability of the electric grid and enabling energy to be captured and delivered on demand. This will also support renewable distributed energy resources like solar and EV, and is aligned with India’s COP26 commitment to reduce carbon emissions by one billion tonnes by 2030 and increase the share of renewables in the energy mix to 50 per cent.
