Secure and enhance the reliability of transmission lines with Transmission Line Arresters

In transmission and distribution of electricity, one of the essential safety equipment in line protection are the Transmission Line Arresters (TLA). This is emphatically important especially where the isokeraunic levels are very high (areas that are prone to strong lightning strikes).

As core essential equipment for safety of Transmission lines, TLA helps safeguard Transmission lines during direct lightning on the power conductor, or back flashover in case of poor tower earthing conditions. It protects the insulator of the transmission line by providing a direct path to the surge voltage during lightning, thereby reducing failure of insulators.

Benefits of Transmission line arresters:
  • Minimizing circuit breaker operations due to possible system outage resulting from back flashover on the transmission line
  • Transmission systems can be operated even where sub-soil gives poor tower footing resistance with appropriate deployment of line arresters
  • Eliminating interrupted power supply for sensitive industrial processes.

Salient features of Raychem RPG line arresters:
  • Every line arrester comes with fast-acting line disconnector which operates and isolates the arrester in the event of faults.
  • The arresters are made of direct molded, cage construction which provides better thermal management and short circuit performance.
  • Compact design and light weight construction; doesn’t add undue stress on conductor.

With proven technology and solutions, Raychem RPG has been providing products, engineering solutions and services catering to Power Generation, Transmission, Distribution and various Industry & OEM segments in the areas of Cable Accessories; Switchgear Connection for Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS; Covered Conductor Solutions; Polymeric Surge Arresters and insulators;Raysulate (Insulation Enhancement System for Sub-Station, Overhead Lines, Busbar, between live parts); Fired Wedge Connector (AMPACT) (Low Loss Energy Efficient Connector for MV & HV Sub – Stations & Overhead Lines); AB Cable accessories and Sub-station Clamps & Connectors and TLA for protecting overhead transmission.

Raychem RPG is a 50:50 Joint Venture between TE Connectivity, U.S.A. (formerly Tyco Electronics) and RPG Enterprises India and have a 30+ year old partnership together. Raychem RPG provide products and solutions to the Energy sector, Transformers and Oil & Gas sectors, with customers across utilities, industries, OEMs, railways and Renewable energy sectors. Raychem RPG has state-of-the-art plants spread across Gujarat and Maharashtra, with cutting edge process equipment, high-voltage laboratories, etc. for manufacturing and qualification.

As one of the pioneers in the industry, Raychem RPG adheres to the values of trust and tradition and has high standards of transparency, ethics and governance.  What enables Raychem RPG to stand out is the depth and details put into an association; whether it is Technical Communications, Quality Assurance, Pursuance, Customer Relationship, or Continuous Support this is all based on reliability, integrity and trust.

And that pursuance and trust was embodied in the installation of TLAs in Power Grid Corporation, Northeast India. It was a culmination of dedication after a couple of years and in 2020, amidst the pandemic, Raychem RPG received the Note of Appreciation for the highest ever number of TLAs installed. This has been replicated in other centers in eastern India, with 132kV TLA (Kolkata) and 400kV TLA (Bhuvaneshwar) installed at customer locations.

Responding to the success of these installations, Mr. K. R. Jayaraman, National Head (Sales & Service) – Energy Division, Raychem RPG, elatedly confirmed, “Our dedication, customer relationship and continuous support has reiterated our commitment to our customers and has been valued. Our customers know and understand our inputs and the value we bring, and will come back to us for our efficiency, products and trust.”

The year 2021 saw increased requirement of TLAs in 132kV and 400kV segments. Raychem RPG is looking to replicate this success story with other State utilities for enhancing the reliability of transmission & distribution networks.
