Madhya Pradesh prepares ground to receive 600 MW from PGCIL’s 765kV Bhedaghat PS

Madhya Pradesh has begun work on an intrastate transmission system that will enable it to receive 600 MW of power from the Bhedaghat pooling substation (PS) of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL).

At present, two 220kV substations of state transco Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Ltd (MPPTCL) — Nayagaon (Jabalpur) and Narsinghpur — are primarily dependent on PGCIL’s 400kV Sukha substation. The sources of power feeding Sukha are the Amarkantak and Bir Singhpur power plants of the state generation utility.

In view of the increasing load, MPPTCL has planned an ambitious scheme for additional power evacuation for Madhya Pradesh from PGCIL’s 765/400/220kV Bhedaghat PS.

Under the scheme, both circuits of MMPTCL’s existing 220kV Jabalpur-Narsinghpur double-circuit line are being LILOed at the Bhedaghat PS. A total of 45 towers are being installed along the 7-km stretch from the LILO point in Lamheti village to Bhedaghat.

In a release, MPPTCL said that the state transco’s Managing Director, Sunil Tiwari, recently inspected the ongoing construction of the 220kV line from the pooling substation near the Bhedaghat substation to the LILO point. He directed the officials to complete the remaining work before the Rabi season so that the benefits of the project could be made available during the current season itself.

Upon completion of the project, an additional power transmission capacity of 300 MW each will be available for the Nayagaon and Narsinghpur substations, providing a total benefit of 600 MW to Madhya Pradesh. This will increase the state’s available transfer capability (ATC) and further strengthen the reliability and robustness of the power transmission system.

Meeting regional demand

PGCIL will be meeting the additional regional demand of Madhya Pradesh by installing two 400/220kV, 500 MVA transformers at the Bhedaghat PS. This will make 1,000 MW of additional power available to Madhya Pradesh.

This augmentation will also facilitate more effective evacuation of Madhya Pradesh’s share of 756 MW of power from NTPC Gadarwara super thermal power project. This system will help meet the projected electricity requirements of the Jabalpur, Narsinghpur and Pipariya regions in the coming years, the MPPTCL release observed.

The Gadarwara STPP currently has installed capacity of 1,600 MW coming from two 800-MW supercritical units, in operation since 2011. Two identical units are being planned for addition under Stage-II of the project.
