NTPC Ltd and Africa50, the specialist investor in African infrastructure, have signed a Cooperation Agreement to identify, assess and develop power-generation projects and cross-border electricity trading opportunities across Africa.

In a release, NTPC said that this partnership will draw on NTPC’s engineering and operational capabilities and Africa50’s project development and financing expertise to advance commercially viable power projects, attract investment and expand reliable electricity supply for households and businesses.

Role of two partners

NTPC will bring its extensive technical, engineering, project development, construction management and operations expertise to assess project feasibility, develop viable solutions and support the progression of identified opportunities towards implementation. Africa50 will complement these capabilities by leveraging its proprietary continental-scale pipeline and unparalleled access to governments and regulators through its 34 African country shareholders to identify priority power projects, structure them for investment and support their progress across the project life cycles.

Commercial viable power projects

Gurdeep Singh, Chairman & Managing Director, NTPC Ltd, said: “We look forward to working with Africa50 to develop commercially viable power projects in mutually agreed countries in Africa. Combining NTPC’s technical and operational experience with Africa50’s project development capabilities and relationships across the continent creates a strong foundation for supporting reliable power supply and regional electricity trade.”

Supporting industrial growth

According to Alain Ebobisse, Group Chief Executive Officer of Africa50, said: “Reliable and competitively priced power is central to Africa’s industrial and economic transformation. This partnership combines Africa50’s ability to develop, de-risk and deliver investable projects with NTPC’s proven technical expertise to translate public ambition into private investment in power generation. Together, we aim to strengthen regional power systems that support industrial growth, expand trade and create jobs.”

PGCIL and Africa50

Central PSU Power Grid Power Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) is also actively collaborating with Africa50 for pursuing power transmission-related opportunities in African nations. Way back in November 2019, PGCIL and Africa50 signed a cooperation agreement to partner in the development, finance, construction and operation of power transmission lines in Kenya. In November 2021, the PGCIL board approved initial expenditure under the Africa50 collaboration venture.

In a significant development that took place in January 2022, PGCIL and Africa50 signed an agreement to develop “Kenya Transmission Project,” which is Kenya’s very first set of transmission lines to be developed by the public-private partnership (PPP) framework.
