ANDRITZ has made significant progress on the Pinnapuram pumped storage project (PSP) that it is building for Greenko Group in Andhra Pradesh.

In a release, ANDRITZ said that a standout accomplishment was the swift installation of all 8 draft tubes within a remarkable four-month timeframe. Adding to this feat, the installation and pressure testing of spiral cases, a critical milestone, was achieved within eight months for all 8 units, reaching completion in December 2023.

With the foundational water conducting systems in place, ANDRITZ transitioned to the main installation of the turbine-generator for Unit 1. The turbine shaft free activity and the assembly of the stator was completed within 45 days in the first month of 2024, thereby keeping track of the project timeline.

With the main unit installation nearing completion, ANDRITZ aims to commence the commissioning works of the unit and in parallel complete work on the balance units, ANDRITZ said.

It may be recalled that in May 2023, ANDRITZ said that it successfully completed the factory acceptance of the Guide Apparatus (GA) and Main Inlet Valve (MIV) of Unit 1 of the Pinnapuram PSP, at its plant in Prithla, Haryana. The factory acceptance was conducted in the presence of representatives of Greenko, the project promoter.

The GA assembly, with a total weight of 225 tonnes, a diameter of 8.5m and a height of 5.2m, is one of the largest and heaviest guide apparatuses manufactured in ANDRITZ’s Indian plant.

In October 2020, ANDRITZ announced that it had received a contract from Greenko Energy Pvt Ltd for the supply of electro-mechanical equipment for the 1,200-mw Pinnapuram pumped storage plant.

The contract includes design, manufacture, supply, transportation, erection, testing, and commissioning of four 240-mw units, two 120-mw reversible pump units, main inlet valves, and associated auxiliaries.

Located in the Kumool district of Andhra Pradesh, the hydropower plant will be part of the first integrated renewable energy storage project combining electrical energy production based on photovoltaic solar, wind, and pumped storage. Once commissioned, Pinnapuram is touted to be the largest pumped storage scheme in India.

The contract includes design, manufacture, supply, transportation, erection, testing, and commissioning of four 240-mw units, two 120-mw reversible pump units, main inlet valves, and associated auxiliaries.
