ANDRITZ, in a release, said that it will equip Torrent Power’s new Saidongar-1 Karjat pumped storage plant in Maharashtra with ten pump turbines, motor generators and additional electromechanical equipment.

The order value is in the low three-digit million euro range and will be included in ANDRITZ’s order intake for the first quarter of 2026.

Largest PSP in India

With a capacity of 3,000 MW, Saidongar-1 Karjat, located in Maharashtra, will be India’s largest pumped storage plant, the release observed.  It is being developed by Torrent Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Torrent Power.

Once operational, it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 4.55 million tonnes per year, roughly equivalent to taking around 1 million cars off the road annually. With an annual energy production of 6,241 GWh, it will play an essential role in India’s energy planning and economic growth, the release noted.

Scope of works

ANDRITZ’s scope for the Saidongar-1 Karjat project comprises the design, manufacture, installation, testing, and commissioning of ten reversible pump turbines, motor-generators, and related electromechanical equipment. The project with maximized local content, will be executed using ANDRITZ’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in India, supported by the company’s global network.

Contributing to seven PSPs in India

This important order underlines ANDRITZ’s strong position in the Indian hydropower market and its expertise in delivering pumped storage solutions, which play a crucial role in ensuring grid stability and supporting the integration of variable renewable energy. ANDRITZ is currently involved in the implementation of seven new pumped storage plants in India. This is the first order placed by Torrent Group with ANDRITZ, the release added.

Editor’s Note: In January 2026, Larsen & Toubro announced that it has won a mandate for civil and hydromechanical works of the Saigondar-1 PSP located in Raigad district, Maharashtra. It may also be noted that Torrent Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd was earlier known as Torrent PSH 3 Pvt Ltd)
