Bajel Projects Ltd has announced the winning of an order for building a 765kV air-insulated substation in Maharashtra.
In a release, Bajel said that order, valued at between Rs.200 crore and Rs.300 crore (inclusive of GST), was placed by NES Pune East New Transmission Ltd, a subsidiary of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL).
The order involves building the new 765kV Pune (East) AIS substation in Maharashtra. It also entails, bay extension works at the existing Karjat and Lokinand-II substations owned by state transco Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Ltd. (MSETCL).
The EPC contract is scheduled for completion in 21 months, Bajel Projects said.
Defining moment
“This order win marks a defining moment for Bajel as we strengthen our presence in the 765kV substation segment through a strategically critical project in Pune, one of the country’s most important industrial hubs. The Pune East 765/400kV substation, together with the augmentation of Karjat and Lonikand-II, will play a pivotal role in removing transmission constraints in the Pune Region and strengthening Maharashtra’s grid,” noted Rajesh Ganesh, MD & CEO, Bajel Projects Ltd.

According to information available with tndindia.com but not contained in the Bajel Projects’ release, NES Pune East New Transmission Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PGCIL, is developing an intrastate transmission system (InSTS) project in Maharashtra, referred to as “Network expansion scheme in Maharashtra for removal of transmission constraints in Pune region-I (765/400kV Pune East).”
PGCIL won this project under the TBCB framework, and the project SPV was formally acquired on March 12, 2026. This project also marks PGCIL’s debut in the intrastate-TBCB space in Maharashtra.
With a completion period of 24 months, the scheme mainly involves putting up a new 765/400kV, 2×1500 MVA AIS substation at Pune (East), supported by a 1×240 MVAR bus reactor at 765kV level. This substation will be connected to existing substations of MSETCL like Karjat and Lonikand-II, at 400kV level. Besides, the upcoming 765kV Pune [Shikrapur] (GIS) – Pune III (GIS) line will also be LILO-ed at the upcoming Pune (East) substation.
