Bondada Engineering Ltd has debuted in the battery energy storage system (BESS) space by winning a 100MWh project in Telangana under global tariff-based competitive bidding.
In a stock exchange filing, Hyderabad-based Bondada Engineering Ltd said that it has secured a mandate from Telangana Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TGGENCO) for setting up a 100 MWh (50 MW x 2 hours) BESS in Telangana for “on-demand” usage under the build, own, operate (BOO) model.
The BESS will be put up at Shankarpally near the 400/200kV substation of Transmission Corporation of Telangana Ltd. The project is expected to be set up in 18 months from the date of executing the power purchase agreement (PPA), Bondada Engineering said, adding that the broad consideration of this order would be around Rs.204.20 crore (inclusive of GST) over a 12-year period.
“We are delighted to inform that this is first of its kind order for our company in BESS business line. By securing this prestigious order, the company has demonstrated its capability and leadership in delivering cutting-edge energy solutions in a rapidly evolving sector. Securing this order from BESS sector is in line with the company’s Vision-2030,” the filing by Bondada Engineering noted.
The BESS mandate won by Bondada follows a tendering process initiated by TGGENCO in January 2025 when it sought bids for setting up a total of 500 MWh (250 MW x 2 hours) BESS in Telangana for “on-demand” usage.
According to the tender documents, the BESS will be charged by drawing power from Telangana discoms and will be injected back to the discoms’ network in accordance with the dispatch instructions issued by the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC).
Land will be provided on lease (or on right-to-use basis) with zero charges by TGGENCO to the BESS developer, under a suitable agreement between the two parties, the tender document stated.
Meanwhile, it is learnt from other reliable sources that this 500 MWh BESS tender was awarded to the extent of 450 MWh (225 MW x 2 hours). While Bondada Engineering won 100 MWh as discussed in this story, other winners were Oriana Power (100 MWh) and Pace Digitek (250 MWh). The BESS projects are eligible for viability gap funding (VGF) that is learnt to be Rs.27 lakh per MWh or 30 per cent of the project cost, whichever is lower.
