Hyderabad-headquartered Bondada Engineering Ltd has been awarded a battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Tamil Nadu, under competitive bidding.
In a stock exchange communication, Bondada said that the letter of award was placed by Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGECL) and it involves putting up BESS facilities of 400 MWh (200 MW x 2 hours) with complete two-cycle charging/discharging for “on-demand” usage at the Vellaviduthi and Thennampatti substations in Tamil Nadu.
The project will be develop under the build, own, operate (BOO) model and was awarded under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) modality. The project will receive viability gap funding (VGF), Bondada said.
The BESS project is expected to be commissioned in 18 months from the execution of the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) and the broad consideration of the project (revenue stream) is estimated at around Rs.836 crore over a 12-year period.
The stock exchange filing noted that this was the highest storage capacity order in the history of Bondada Engineering in the BESS line of business and it marks a significant step towards creating bigger battery energy storage systems as a part of company’s vision to reach 10 GW capacity in green space by 2030.
The initiative aligns with India’s National Framework for Energy Storage Systems (NFESS), 2023, and Tamil Nadu’s ambitious goal of achieving 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030. The system is expected to integrate with the state grid by 2027, contributing to India’s 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target, the filing said.
Other winners
Meanwhile, according to information available from reliable sources, under the same TNGECL tender that was floated in March 2025, Oriana Power was awarded 50 MW/100 MWh while NLC India Renewables was the biggest winner with 250 MW/500 MWh. The tender sought to create 500 MW/1000 MWh of BESS capacity with a VGF support of Rs.27 lakh per MWh or 30 per cent of the project cost, whichever is lower.
It is further learnt that the tariff quoted by Bondada Engineering and Oriana Power was Rs.2.46 lakh per MW per month, while that of NLC India Renewables was Rs.2.48 lakh per MW per month.
