ENGIE has announced the successful award of its solar PV project coupled with energy storage system (ESS) in India.

In a release, ENGIE said that it has been awarded a 200-MW solar PV and 100 MW/600 MWh ESS project in a competitive bidding process conducted by Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI).

This marks ENGIE’s first hybrid solar + storage project in India and a major milestone in its clean energy journey in the country, the release said.

With almost 2 GW of renewable assets in operation and under construction, and after securing its first Battery Energy Storage System project (280 MW/560 MWh) in November, this achievement further reinforces ENGIE’s long-term commitment to supporting India’s energy transition and delivering reliable, round-the-clock renewable power.

The award reinforces ENGIE’s long-term commitment to supporting India’s clean energy ambitions and strengthening grid reliability as renewable capacity scales rapidly. The project will contribute to delivering clean, affordable, and reliable power while supporting India’s broader transition toward a more resilient and future-ready energy system.

The project will now move into the next phase of development, including detailed engineering, procurement, and regulatory approvals, followed by construction. ENGIE will work closely with technology partners, suppliers, and relevant authorities to ensure timely and compliant execution, the release noted.

According to information independently available, the solar-ESS project can be located anywhere in the country, provided connectivity to the interstate transmission system (ISTS) is ensured.

A major first

Amit Jain, CEO & Country Manager ENGIE India, Managing Director Renewables & Batteries India & South-East Asia, said “This project marks a major first for us— hybrid Solar + Storage project in India. In an increasingly unpredictable global energy landscape, enabling firm, clean power isn’t just a technical breakthrough, it’s a strategic imperative. By integrating long-duration storage with large-scale solar, we’re supporting India’s ambition for 24/7 renewable power and stronger grid resilience. This win deepens ENGIE’s commitment as a long-term partner in building a future-ready, low-carbon energy system that can weather both demand shifts and global disruptions.”

Other winners

According to information released by Mercom, other winners in the SECI auction include NLC India Renewables, Oriana Power and RPIL Power Three (part of Rays Power Infra). The SECI tender envisaged total solar power generation capacity of 1,200 MW, co-located with an energy storage system of 0.5 MW/3 MWh per MW of solar capacity. The total ESS capacity envisaged therefore works out to 600 MW/3,600 MWh.
