Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Ltd (Mahagenco) has placed an order on Bharat Heavy Electricals for setting up Unit 6 of the Bhusaval thermal power station in Jalgaon district of the western state. BHEL won the order through international competitive bidding.

This 660-mw coal-fired unit will be the first supercritical unit at the Bhusaval plant, which currently has a capacity of 1,420 mw coming from two units each of 210-mw and 500-mw rating. All the existing units of the Bhusaval TPS have also been supplied by BHEL, a statement from BHEL said.

BHEL has so far supplied 81 per cent of the total installed power generation capacity of Mahagenco

The Rs.2,800-crore order placed on BHEL will involve design, engineering, manufacture, supply, construction, erection, testing and commissioning of the 1×660-mw MW supercritical thermal set and civil works.

The key equipment for the contract will be manufactured at BHEL’s Trichy, Haridwar, Bhopal, Ranipet, Hyderabad, Jhansi, Thirumayam and Bengaluru plants while the company’s Power Sector – Western Region (PSWR) shall be responsible for civil works and erection and commissioning of the equipment.

Market Leader

As of January 17, 2018, BHEL had secured orders for 50 supercritical steam generators (boilers) and 43 supercritical steam turbine-generators (TG sets), making it the market leader in the segment. These orders span various ratings like 660-mw and 800-mw and have been placed by both private and government-owned power generators. As of given date, 15 boilers and 13 TG sets had begun commercial operations.
