BSES discoms have elicited good response to their tender for 5 million smart meters, reliable media reports suggest.

According to reports, bidders include Indian companies like HPL Electric, Secure Meters, L&T, Adani Transmission, etc. The list of international entities in the fray has names like EdF (France), Enel (Italy), Bosch (Germany) and Itron (USA). A total of 18 entities have shown interest in the tender, it is learnt.

BSES, owned by Anil Ambani Group, has two discoms in Delhi – BSES Yamuna Power and BSES Rajdhani Power – covering south, east and east Delhi. The tender is for procuring around 5 million smart meters, valued at Rs.4,000 crore.

Reports go on to suggest that the smart meter rollout would begin from October this year and continue till March 2025.

Meanwhile, it is learnt from official statistics that India’s total smart meter population recently crossed the 4-million mark. Around a fifth of the total smart meters are of the prepaid variety.

Smart meters are currently installed under various Centrally-sponsored schemes like DDUGJY (Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana), IPDS (Integrated Power Development Scheme), NSGM (National Smart Grid Mission), PMDP (Prime Minister’s Development Package) and Smart Grid pilot projects. Apart from these, power distribution utilities (both state government and private) are carrying out smart meter installations
