Madhya Pradesh state transco introduces bare-hand, hot-line maintenance

In a major technological advancement aimed at enhancing the reliability of power transmission in Madhya Pradesh, the state transco Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Ltd (MPPTCL) has introduced bare-hand and hot-line maintenance techniques for extra high voltage transmission lines and substations.

In a release, MPPTCL said that the innovative techniques will enable maintenance and repair works on live transmission lines, particularly 400kV lines, without interrupting power supply, thereby reducing the need for power shutdowns and ensuring uninterrupted electricity to consumers.

According to company officials, the adoption of these advanced maintenance practices forms part of the state transco’s ongoing efforts to modernise the state’s transmission network and improve the quality and reliability of power supply. The techniques facilitate timely detection and rectification of defects such as weak insulators, conductor abnormalities and other technical deficiencies before they develop into major faults.

Modern technologies

MPPTCL has also expanded the use of modern technologies including drones, thermal imaging systems, offline fault locator-cum-signature analysers, puncture insulator detectors and high-voltage insulation testing equipment for condition monitoring of transmission assets. These tools enable engineers to identify potential problems in advance and undertake corrective action proactively, the release noted.

Transmission availability improves

The company has reported a transmission system availability of 99.52 per cent during FY26, exceeding the 98 per cent benchmark prescribed by Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (MPERC). Transmission losses remained contained at 2.6 per cent, reflecting operational efficiency and effective network management.

Minimum disruption

Officials stated that in the past, maintenance activities on transmission lines often required temporary shutdowns, affecting power supply in several areas. With the implementation of bare-hand and hot-line maintenance, specially trained personnel equipped with advanced safety equipment can safely undertake maintenance work on energised lines, thereby avoiding disruptions to electricity supply.

Replacement of ageing equipment

As part of its Replacement and Renovation Programme, MPPTCL has also undertaken extensive replacement of ageing equipment to strengthen the transmission network. During FY26, the company replaced 56 circuit breakers, 390 current transformers, 97 potential transformers, 200 lightning arresters, 79 battery sets, 50 battery chargers, 45 control and relay panels and 37 isolators.

Towards improved reliability

The company is placing increasing emphasis on preventive and predictive maintenance practices, with regular inspections, testing and technology-based monitoring aimed at detecting faults well before their occurrence. This proactive approach is expected to reduce unforeseen breakdowns and further improve the reliability of power transmission across the state, the release added.
