State power utility Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Ltd (MPPTCL) has established a new SCADA system housed in a newly-constructed control room located at Navagaon in Jabalpur.

The old SCADA system now stands upgraded in conformity with the latest guidelines issued by Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Operations from the new SCADA control room were recently initiated, MPPTCL said in a release.

Upgraded features

The new SCADA system, built at an estimated cost of around ₹51.88 crore, offers several new features compared to the old system. As per CEA guidelines, the new SCADA system has been enhanced with the latest technologies and cybersecurity measures. Now, real-time data from each minute of the state’s extra high tension substations can be acquired and securely stored. This has improved the efficiency and reliability of the modern SCADA system, and also brought significant enhancements in security and data analysis capabilities, the release noted.

Advanced security

The new SCADA system includes advanced firewalls and a multi-layered security structure, providing enhanced protection against potential cyber threats. The dashboard is equipped with advanced data analytics features, making decision-making more effective. Real-time data analytics will improve the accuracy and relevance of information, aiding better decision-making and faster responses. The new system features a user-friendly interface with a modern and intuitive graphical user interface (GUI), making operations more efficient and convenient for operators. This SCADA upgrade will play a vital role in aligning with evolving international industrial standards and safety requirements.

Data transmission

To ensure cybersecurity, the SCADA system’s data will now be transmitted through MPPTCL’s optical fiber ground wire (OPGW) using a local area network (LAN). The upgrade process was supported by revised drawings and precise tendering managed senior MPPTCL officials, the release added.
