Independent power producer Sembcorp Energy India Ltd and Suzlon Group announced the completion of the first SECI-1 wind power project in India.

Sembcorp Green Infra Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SEIL, won this project in the first round of wind bids conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) on behalf of the Government of India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), in April 2017.

Sembcorp’s 250-mw project is the first wind power project, under the first reverse wind auctions in India, with the entire capacity completed ahead of the SECI timelines. Suzlon is the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner for the project.

An official release noted that for the project, a mammoth Russia-made aircraft “Antonov 124” was hired to fly in the GIS switchgear and other ancillaries, together weighing 55 tonnes. This is the largest air freight to be brought into the country, the release claimed. Over 10,000 trucks and trailers of various kinds have plied in and out of the project site. Besides, nine main cranes and 60 assembly cranes were deployed in the project.

Located at Chandragiri in Tamil Nadu, the wind farm consists of 119 units of Suzlon’s 2.1-mw S111-120m wind turbine generators. Under long term power purchase agreement (PPA) between Sembcorp and PTC India, power generated from the project will be supplied to the states of Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

It may be mentioned that Sembcorp Energy India Ltd (SEIL) is an independent power producer (IPP) in India. Formerly known as Thermal Powertech Corporation India Ltd, SEIL owns 100 per cent of both Sembcorp Gayatri Power Ltd and Sembcorp Green Infra Ltd. It has a balanced portfolio of thermal and renewable energy assets totalling approx. 4.37 GW capacity in operation and under construction.
