Siemens Energy India Ltd: Order backlog up 22 per cent

Siemens Energy India Ltd (SEIL) witnessed a 22 per cent year-on-year growth in its outstanding order book, as of March 31, 2026.

The order book stood at Rs.184.3 billion as against Rs.150.8 billion as of March 31, 2025. The power transmission business had a share of around 68 per cent in the company’s latest order book, slightly higher than 65 per cent as of March 31, 2025.

Siemens Energy India Ltd operates broadly through two divisions – power generation (steam turbines) and power transmission (transformers, switchgear, etc).

The new order inflow in the six-month period ending March 31, 2026, at Rs.66.6 billion, was around 11 per cent lower than the comparable Rs.74.7 billion in the same period of 2025.

SEIL’s accounting year runs from October 1 to September 30. The period from October 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026, therefore, represents the first half (H1) of FY26. Likewise, H1FY25 covers the period from October 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025. (See table)

Capex plans

In Q1FY26, Siemens Energy India Ltd announced its plan of putting up a new transformer manufacturing facility at a capital outlay of Rs.20.6 billion (Rs.2,060 crore) to be met through internal accruals. Currently, the company is finalizing the location for the proposed factory; discussions are underway with several state governments to this effect.

At the Kalwa transformer manufacturing factory in Maharashtra, an expansion programme to double capacity from the existing 15,000 MVA to 30,000 MVA is already underway. Similarly, manufacturing capacity at the Aurangabad switchgear plant in Maharashtra is also being expanded. Both these projects, with combined investment of Rs.7.4 billion, are expected to come onstream by middle of 2027.

Synchronous condensers

SEIL feels that the Indian market for synchronous condensers (SynCon) is shaping up. During 2026, the company would have its first SynCon units in the Indian market. These would initially be sourced from the company’s global facilities. While the company is keen to localize SynCon production, it would do so when there is sufficient demand to justify investment, the company’s senior management disclosed at a recent investor conference.

It may be mentioned that it is early days for India with respect to deployment of SynCon units. Interestingly, an ISTS-TBCB project, dedicated purely to SynCon units was recently under bidding. (Related story)

Siemens Energy India Ltd is also a big player with respect to STATCOM (static synchronous compensator). The company had an impressive order inflow for STATCOM in H1FY25 but the momentum slowed down in FY26. SEIL produces STATCOM at its Goa factory with a significantly localized content, except for semiconductor-related components.
