Tata Power has successfully commissioned the second element of its Jalpura-Khurja transmission project in Uttar Pradesh, further strengthening the state’s power transmission infrastructure and enhancing connectivity to the growing electricity demand centres across NCR and Western Uttar Pradesh.
In a release, Tata Power said that the second element of the project, executed through TP Jalpura Khurja Power Transmission Ltd (TPJKPTL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Power, comprises a 400kV double-circuit transmission line from Khurja to Jalpura spanning 162 ckm and a 400/220kV GIS substation at Jalpura with 1,000 MVA transformation capacity.
The 162-ckm transmission corridor comprises two circuits of approximately 81 km each and establishes a critical high-voltage link between Khurja and Jalpura. Khurja is an important power node in Western Uttar Pradesh, playing a strategic role in enabling efficient transmission of power towards NCR and Noida.
The newly commissioned 400/220kV GIS substation at Jalpura, with 1,000 MVA transformation capacity, will serve as a major power gateway, enabling the transfer of power from the 400kV high-voltage grid to the 220kV network. This will support the region’s increasing power requirements while enhancing the reliability, resilience and efficiency of the transmission network, the release noted.
According to information available with tndindia.com, the Jalpura-Khurja project now stands fully commissioned. It may be recalled that in January 2026, Tata Power had announced the commissioning of the first element – the 400/220kV, 2×500 MVA Metro Depot (GIS) substation. A 2-ckm LILO of one circuit of the existing 400kV Greater Noida – Pali line, a small element of the project, has already been commissioned.
In an assessment by tndindia.com, the Jalpura-Khurja project also becomes Tata Power’s first “greenfield” transmission project secured under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) mechanism, to achieve completion. (In this context, “greenfield” stands for a project won through competitive bidding, and not acquisition)
According to information available with tndindia.com, Tata Power’s overall transmission line portfolio currently stands at 7,894 ckm, including 5,724 ckm in operation and 2,170 ckm under construction. (See tables)


Tata Power won this intrastate scheme under the TBCB mode with bid process coordinator REC Power Development & Consultancy Ltd (RECPDCL) issuing the letter of intent in February 2024. Tata Power was competing for this project alongside two other bidders – Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) and Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd.
The project is officially termed as “Construction of 400/220kV, 2×500 MVA GIS substation Metro Depot (Greater Noida) with associated lines and 400/220kV, 2×500 MVA GIS substation Jalpura with associated lines” and is being developed under the BOOT mode with a concession period of 35 years.
The project involves capital expenditure of around Rs.744 crore and has an implementation period of 18 months, from the date of SPV transfer.
The EPC contract for the Jalpura-Khurja project was placed on Bajel Projects in January 2024.
As indicated earlier, this project marks the formal entry of Tata Power in the greenfield intrastate-TBCB space, which is to say that the project was acquired through competitive bidding and not through acquisition.
