Torrent Power witnessed higher T&D losses in most of its licensed and franchised power distribution areas during the first quarter (Q1: April to June) of FY27.
According to an investor presentation, Torrent Power saw higher T&D losses, year-on-year, in three out of the four licensed areas. However, in the UT of DNH&DD, such losses were lower at 1.6 per cent in Q1FY27 as against 1.7 per cent in Q1FY26.
In the franchised business, losses in Bhiwandi (Maharashtra) and Agra (Uttar Pradesh) were higher in Q1FY27 relative to those in Q1FY26. On the other hand, losses in the Shil-Mumbra-Kalwa (SMK, Maharashtra) area fell from 25.9 per cent in Q1FY26 to 24.6 per cent in Q1FY27.
Across all its licensed and franchised areas, overall electricity purchase rose by 3.4 per cent from 8,902 MU in Q1FY26 to 9,205 MU in the same quarter of FY27.
In terms of electricity purchase in Q1FY27, the Ahmedabad & Gandhinagar licensed area was the biggest with a share of 33 per cent, followed by DNH&DD with 29 per cent.
Torrent Power’s overall losses in the power distribution business, covering both licensed and franchised areas, were higher at around 7.8 per cent in Q1FY27 from 6.5 per cent in Q1FY26. (This is a weighted average of individual area losses, with weights assigned to electricity purchase.)
It may be recalled that in Q1FY26, Torrent Power had recorded lower year-on-year losses across all its seven operational licensed and franchised areas. (See table)
Power Transmission
As of June 30, 2026, Torrent Power had an operational transmission line portfolio comprising 952 ckm of 400kV lines and 388 ckm of 220kV lines.
Another 80 ckm is expected to be commissioned through an ISTS-TBCB project housed under “Solapur Transmission Ltd.” This project, termed as “Transmission system for evacuation of power from RE projects in Solapur (1,500 MW) SEZ in Maharashtra” entails a 400kV double-circuit line from Solapur Pooling Station (PS) to PGCIL’s Solapur substation, running 80 ckm. According to a report by Central Electricity Authority, as of June 30, 2026, 107 tower foundations, out of a total of 111, were constructed. Further, tower erection on 96 was completed as of given date.
The Solapur PS, which is an important project constituent, will be equipped with four interconnecting transformers of 400/220kV, 500 MVA each. All the four ICTs were received at the project site, as of June 30, 2026, the CEA report said.
Torrent Power is also building a 400kV transmission line, of about 28 ckm, associated with the company’s Saidongar-I pumped storage project coming up in Maharashtra. (Read more)
