Torrent Power set to commission two transmission projects in FY26

Torrent Power expects to commission two power transmission projects within the ongoing fiscal year, according to an investor presentation issued by the Torrent Group company.

These two projects – both interstate schemes – will see Torrent Power’s transmission portfolio rise by around 200 ckm.

Solapur Transmission Ltd

The first project to commission is an ISTS scheme won by Torrent Power under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) mechanism. Housed under “Solapur Transmission Ltd,” this scheme involves building infrastructure for evacuation of 1.5 GW of solar power from Solapur in Maharashtra. The scheme mainly consists of building a new 400/200kV, 4×500 MVA substation at Solapur, and a 400kV double-circuit line of around 80 ckm connecting this substation to the existing Solapur substation of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL).

With an estimated investment of Rs.470 crore, this ISTS-TBCB scheme, currently under construction, is expected to commission by March 2026.

This scheme also marked Torrent Power’s entry as a transmission service provider (TSP) under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) framework. Once commissioned, this project is projected to earn tariff of Rs.50 crore per year, during the concession period.

Khavda II-D

The second project that Torrent Power expects to commission by end of FY26 is the “Khavda II-D” scheme assigned to Torrent Power Grid Ltd (TPGL) under the regulated tariff mechanism (RTM) modality.

This Rs.800-crore project aims to augment power evacuation infrastructure in Gujarat, associated with Torrent Power’s SUGEN combined-cycle gas-based power plant in Gujarat. It will involve putting up a 120-ckm 400kV double-circuit LILO, as well as bay upgradation works.

Incidentally, the Khavda II-D project was originally planned to come under the TBCB route but the project was eventually assigned to TPGL under the RTM framework.

Current portfolio

Torrent Power’s current operational portfolio is entirely covered by Torrent Power Grid Ltd – a joint venture between Torrent Power (equity: 74 per cent) and PGCIL (26 per cent). In May 2007, TPGL was granted licence to construct, maintain and operate a transmission scheme related to evacuation from Torrent Power’s 1,100-mw SUGEN combined cycle power project at Akhakhol in Gujarat. The scheme was progressively commissioned by 2011.

TPGL currently has an operational transmission line portfolio of 710 ckm of 400kV lines and about 250 ckm of 220kV lines.
