CESC Ltd has maintained its trend of lower T&D losses in its power distribution business during the first nine months (9M: April to December) of FY26.
According to a data analysis by tndindia.com based on an investor presentation filed by CESC on stock exchanges, the RP-Sanjiv Goenka (RPSG) Group’s flagship company enjoyed lower T&D losses across all its licensed and franchised power distribution areas. The same phenomenon was observed in H1 (April to September) of FY26.
In the Kolkata licensed area, where CESC has a consumer base of around 3.7 million spread across an area of 567 sqkm, T&D losses improved to 7.47 per cent in 9MFY26 from 7.80 per cent in 9MFY25. This licensed area, however, also saw a nearly 1 per cent fall in electricity sales.
The three franchised areas in Rajasthan – Kota, Bharatpur and Bikaner –saw combined T&D losses fell from 13.7 per cent in 9MFY25 to 12.1 per cent in 9MFY26. The combined losses have been worked out as a weighted metric of individual losses with weights assigned to electricity sales.
In the Greater Noida licensed area of Uttar Pradesh – handled by Noida Power Company Ltd (a JV between RPSG Group and Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority) – T&D losses were lower at 8 per cent in 9MFY26 as against 8.30 per cent in 9MFY25. Electricity sales in Greater Noida rose by around 7 per cent, year-on-year in 9MFY26.
In the Malegaon franchisee area in Maharashtra, T&D losses were 37.50 per cent in 9MFY26 — the highest in CESC’s overall portfolio. However, even here, this marked an improvement compared with 40 per cent in 9MFY25. Lower losses derived from vigilance drives and various loss-reduction initiatives, the investor presentation observed.

With respect to the newly-acquired licensed area of Chandigarh, T&D losses in 9MFY26 were 10 per cent, improving from 10.99 per cent seen in H1 (April to September) of FY26. It may be recalled that CESC Ltd took over as distribution licensee of the UT of Chandigarh, during February/March 2025. Operations are managed by Chandigarh Power Distribution Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CESC group company Eminent Electricity Distribution Ltd. CESC Ltd, the flagship company of RPSG Group, is the 100 per cent holding company of Eminent Electricity Distribution Ltd.
CESC’s power distribution business, combining the licensee and franchisee models, covers seven locations with a total area of 1,454 sqkm and a customer base of over 4.8 million. Aggregate electricity sales in FY25 stood at around 19,000 MU. The geographical footprint of CESC’s power distribution business is spread over West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and the UT of Chandigarh.
