MPPTCL energizes 500 MVA power transformer at Mandsaur substation

Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Ltd (MPPTCL or MP Transco) has successfully installed and energized an additional power transformer at the 400kV Mandsaur substation.

In a release, MPPTCL said that this 400/220kV, 500 MVA power transformer will help strengthen power supply in the Malwa region.

The Mandsaur–Neemuch region has emerged as one of the country’s prominent solar energy hubs. The new transformer will not only ensure reliable support for the region’s growing power demand but will also further strengthen and enhance the reliability of the power system in the Malwa region in the coming years, the release noted.

This is the third 400kV power transformer at Mandsaur, adding to the two existing power transformers of 315 MVA capacity each.

Considering the increasing allocation of Madhya Pradesh’s share of power from the Central grid, rapid growth in solar energy generation, and rising requirements of the Chambal pumping projects, a higher-capacity transformer had become necessary. The new 500 MVA transformer was designed to meet these requirements.

Areas to Benefit

Capacity augmentation at the 400kV Mandsaur substation will directly benefit the downstream 220kV substations at Gurjarkhedi, Suwasra, Nipania, Ratangarh, Daloda, and Neemuch. The high-capacity transformer will facilitate large-scale evacuation of solar power. Additionally, pumping substations of the Chambal irrigation project will also receive power support from this installation.

With this development, Madhya Pradesh will also regularly receive its full share of power from PGCIL’s Neemuch substation.

Transformation capacity in MP

With the energization of the 500 MVA transformer at Mandsaur, the total transmission capacity of Madhya Pradesh has increased to 88,736 MVA, of which MP Transco’s share stands at 84,023 MVA. The remaining is accounted for by projects undertaken under PPP and TBCB modes.

The state currently transmits electricity through 439 EHV substations, including 417 substations operated by MP Transco. The transmission network of Madhya Pradesh has 1,091 operational power transformers, of which 1,043 belong to MP Transco. (See table)
