TARIL wins order for NPCIL’s Kaiga nuclear power project, debuts in nuclear power space

Transformers & Rectifiers (India) Ltd [TARIL] has announced winning a large order for the supply of generator transformers for Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) Kaiga Units 5 & 6 nuclear power project in Karnataka.

The order marks TARIL’s first order in the nuclear power sector, adding a new and strategically important segment to the company’s growing portfolio of critical power infrastructure projects. The order has been received from Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd, a release by TARIL said.

Kaiga Units 5&6 comprise two indigenous 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) being developed by NPCIL at Kaiga, Karnataka. The project is part of India’s indigenous 700 MWe PHWR programme, supporting the country’s efforts to expand nuclear power capacity while strengthening domestic technology and manufacturing capabilities. Together, the two units will add 1,400 MW of nuclear generation capacity at the Kaiga site.

The generator transformers will form a critical part of the electrical infrastructure of the project, supporting the evacuation of power generated by the nuclear power units and its integration with the transmission network.

 

Proud entry

It may be recalled that in April 2025, Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) won a massive Rs.12,800 crore EPC order from NPCIL relating to Units 5&6 of the Kaiga nuclear power plant. This order marked MEIL’s entry in the nuclear power space and the order is believed to be the single-largest order ever placed by NPCIL. (Learn more)

 

High-value power segment

The order further strengthens TARIL’s positioning in the critical and high-value power infrastructure segment, as India continues to invest in expanding generation and transmission capacity. The company has been strengthening its manufacturing capabilities, technology and backward integration to address the evolving requirements of India’s power sector. With its entry into the nuclear power sector, TARIL aims to leverage its established expertise in high-voltage transformer manufacturing to support the requirements of critical power generation and transmission infrastructure and participate in India’s expanding nuclear energy ecosystem.

 

Project background

On March 1,2026, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) achieved the First Pour of Concrete (FPC) of Kaiga Units-5&6 after obtaining all requisite statutory and regulatory clearances.

The first unit of Kaiga Units-5&6 project is expected to achieve criticality in about 60 months from FPC. In a first, Kaiga-5&6 project is being implemented adopting an innovative strategy involving just a few mega EPC packages (like excavation, nuclear island, turbine island and nuclear instrumentation) to enable faster project execution and reduced interface issues.

Kaiga Units-5&6 are state-of-the-art, indigenous 700 MW PHWRs, which incorporate advanced safety features and are among the safest in the world. Three such PHWRs i.e. KAPS-3&4 and RAPP-7, are successfully operating in Gujarat and Rajasthan respectively. [KAPS: Kakrapar Atomic Power Station; RAPP=Rajasthan Atomic Power Project]

At present, the Kaiga site has four 220 MWe units in operation with a total installed capacity of 880 MW. Upon completion of Units-5&6, the total installed capacity at the Kaiga site would reach to 2,280 MW.
