Torrent Power initiates pre-project activities for Saidongar-I PSP transmission line

Torrent Power has initiated pre-project activities on the proposed dedicated transmission line associated with the Saidongar-I pumped storage project (PSP) being set up in Maharashtra by the company’s subsidiary Torrent Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd (TESSPL).

TESSPL has issued a public notice seeking comments from the public with regard to the proposed line.

The 400kV double-circuit line of about 28 ckm will pass through two districts of Raigad and Pune. In Raigad, the line will cover several locations falling under the Karjat taluka while in Pune, it will cover a couple of villages in Maval taluka.

The line will originate from the Saidongar-I PSP switchyard in Karjat taluka, Raigad district and will terminate at the upcoming South Kalamb substation in Pune district.

Speaking to tndindia.com, a senior Torrent Power official said that public notice has been issued to seek feedback before the company proceeds to apply for transmission licence to Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC).

It may be noted that a pumped storage project (PSP) has two aspects – the pumping up of water into the reservoir, and generation of electricity through its discharge (like a conventional hydropower plant).

On this count, the Torrent Power official noted that for pumping, electricity will be sourced from the Maharashtra’s intrastate grid. The electricity generated by the discharge of water will be fed largely into the interstate transmission system (ISTS) grid with the 765/400kV, 2×1500 MVA South Kalamb substation acting as the interface point.

According to information available, the South Kalamb substation is being developed by WRNES Talegaon Power Transmission Ltd, a TBCB subsidiary of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd (AESL). The substation, coming on 350 acres of land, all privately owned, is expected to be commissioned by January 2028. Land acquisition is currently underway, as per a status report by Central Electricity Authority. Incidentally, the South Kalamb substation will be augmented through another ISTS-TBCB scheme housed under “South Kalamb Power Transmission Ltd,” also a wholly-owned subsidiary of AESL acquired in March 2026.

Order placed for PSP

As reported by tndindia.com on April 14, 2026, ANDRITZ Group was awarded a major contract for supply of electromechanical equipment for the 3-GW Saidongar-I PSP. Earlier, in January 2026, Larsen & Toubro announced the winning of a contract relating to civil and hydro-mechanical works of the upcoming PSP.
